Happy Gilmore era un fanático jugador de hockey y ahora no tiene objetivos en su vida. Cuando su novia le abandona y a su madre la echan del piso en el que vive por no pagar el alquiler, decide dedicarse a jugar al golf en torneos profesionales con la esperanza de reunir el suficiente dinero para cambiar su situación. Resulta que Happy tiene un potentísimo swing que manda la pelota a 400 yardas de distancia. Además, debido a su alocado temperamento, comienza a causar furor entre los medios de comunicación por sus extravagantes payasadas en los campos de golf.
