Descrita como una historia de venganza, oscuros secretos y tesoros enterrados, la película tiene como turbulento telón de fondo el Montana de 1870. Se sitúa en los momentos previos a la ejecución de Isaac Broadway, que encarga a su hijo, Henry (Lessard), una tarea imposible: asesinar al hombre que le inculpó de un crimen que no cometió. Con la intención de cumplir su promesa, Henry viaja a la remota ciudad de Trinity, donde un giro inesperado de los acontecimientos le atrapa en la ciudad y le deja atrapado entre Gabriel Dove (Brosnan), el nuevo sheriff de la ciudad, y una misteriosa figura llamada San Cristóbal (Jackson).
